Doctors withdraw service from Machakos, declare the county hostile.

The Kenya medical practitioners, pharmacists and dentists’ union has now started the process of withdrawing its members from Machakos county hospitals after the seven-day notice for apology lapsed.

The union demanded for a public apology from Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua a week ago, over his move to publish scandalous remarks and to suspend three senior health officers at the Kathiani Sub-County Hospital over alleged laziness and negligence of duty.

Mutua had however dismissed the doctors’ ultimatum saying he will not relent in his hunt for lazy officers.

Led by KMPDU Lower Eastern Chairman Harreng Mbithi, the doctors said their demands to Governor Mutua have borne no fruits.

Some of the issues that the doctors are protesting are scandalous and malicious remarks on the health workers made by the governor, failure to follow the right procedure in suspending doctors, salary delays, lack of promotions, non-remittance of statutaory deductions and poor housing.

Doctors have now declared Machakos as a hostile working zone. “We hereby declare Machakos county a hostile employees zone and have since initiated a process of withdrawing our members from hospitals in that region.” Mbithi in areport by the People Daily.
