In a bid to regulate Miraa chewing in Makueni County, the County Assembly has drafted a bill that if passed, will see Miraa chewing at certain times of the day become an offence punishable by imprisonment.

In a raft of new measures tabled in the County Assembly, miraa consumption might only be allowed between 4pm and 11pm on weekdays and 2pm -11pm on weekends.

The Control and Utilisation Bill sponsored by Emali -Mulala MCA Cosmas Kaleli seeks to introduce hefty fines for those who fail to abide by the proposed law.

Those caught consuming the drug miraa outside the stipulated hours will face a fine of not more than Sh100,000 or serve a jail term of not more than one year.

Research has showed that continuous consumption of the drug could affects the sexual capability of men and could lead to heart attack and rise in blood pressure.
