Hundreds of people yesterday thronged Musila gardens in Mwingi Town to commemorate the World Donkeys’ Day.
Organised by Caritus Kitui, the celebrations kicked off with a procession of residents accompanied by their donkey along the streets of Mwingi Town and into the main venue.
Addressing the crowd, Mwingi Central Assistant Deputy County Commissioner George Kones urged farmers to treat their donkeys humanely besides ensuring that the animals get vaccinated quarterly to keep them healthy.
On his part, Caritus’ Kitui Director Joseph Kamau decried the alarming number of cartels who slaughter donkeys and sell the meat to unsuspecting members of the public.
Mr Kamau further beseeched the locals to stay vigilant and to report such cases to facilitate apprehension and prosecution of the culprits.
Area OCS Abichi Matthew cautioned those involved in “the illegal meat business” saying the government will not condone selfish and cash-driven individuals bend on making a kill at the expense of compromising health of the general public.
