Residents of Kitui County were on Saturday urged to preach and maintain peace before, during and after elections.

Speaking after leading a “peaceful campaign walk” procession on the streets of Kitui Town, Kitui Central Sub-County Commissioner Otieno Odidi also warned elected and political leaders to refrain from inciting members of the public into violence during the electioneering period as doing so will attract stern legal action against them.

“Kenya cannot afford to risk a repeat of the 2007/2008 post election violence. Kenyans must strive to ensure tribal co-existence during the count down to elections for peace and unity to prevail in the country,” noted Mr Odidi.

Kitui County Assembly Minority Leader Alex Nganga advised the youth to refuse being used by politicians to do their dirty work and urged the State to arrest and prosecute individuals found funding violent activities for political capital.

The pro peaceful campaigns walk was organized by the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government in conjunction with the Kenya Red Cross Society among other relevant stakeholders.
