Thursday, October 19th: Kitui government is exploring measures to ensure efficient mango processing and curb wastage ahead of the December season.
The possible measures aim at guaranteeing increased value and utility of the much valued fruit which will positively translate to farmers reaping big from the mango plant in the county.
A team of Government officers in the county department of trade, agriculture and finance as well as value chain experts headed by the Deputy Governor Dr. Wathe Nzau on Wednesday 18thOctober visited four Mango processing plants in order to assess their status in terms of operations, scale and capacity, as well as recommendations on possible County Government’s backing.
“The Governor wants to know your plans towards reaching proper mango harvesting and processing mechanisms before December 2017”, Dr. wathe said.
The team which is also exploring on Mango products market visited four of the seven fruit processing plants in Kitui County.
Mango processing plants visited include Kitui County Multi-processors Company in Musengo, Mutonguni ward in Kitui West Sub-County, Kitui Orchards Community Based Organisation in Matinyani Ward in the same Sub-County, Chuluni fruit processing plant in Chuluni ward, Kitui East and Kitui Enterprise Promotion Company in LTD in Nzambani Ward in the above Sub-County.
Earlier this week, Governor Ngilu met mango farmers and officials of the processing plants at the Agricultural Training Centre in Kitui town where deliberations on successful mango farming were discussed.
