Martha Mwende 22 was assaulted by her boyfriend back in 2013 at her Kiluilu home – Kitui township.
She lost her arms and sustained deep injuries on her head and back leaving her hospitalized for months at PCEA Kikuyu Hospital.
Her family was left with a huge hospital bill cleared through the support of well wishers and her local church.
The form 3 student at Yumbisye secondary school, a top performing institution of learning in Kitui township consequently dropped out of school following her disability.
Efforts to find support to enable her purchase prosthetic limbs have remained fruitless five years later.
PCEA Kikuyu hospital costed the artificial arms at Ksh 10 Million which remains a tall order for her poor family.
Nonetheless, she enrolled at Joytown secondary school in Thika town, a special school for persons with physical disability to proceed with her secondary education.
” I had to repeat my second form to get acquainted to the system” she says
She however says life has been difficult for her since owing to lack of school fees and other needs.
Her mother Mary Joseph, a single mother of three says she has sold what she had to keep her daughter in school.
” I want my daughter to finish her education and later get a job to support herself together with her child” she says
Mwende says she has since accepted her condition and is ready to finish her studies.
” I appeal for support from well wishers to help me obtain prosthetic arms and finish my education” she told the press
Pastor Anthony Muthoka of Redeemed Gospel Church who has remained her spiritual father says the girl has a potential to excel in her academics if well supported.
” If we can find some monetary support to enable her raise her annual school fees of Ksh 40,000 we can keep her in school as we await more aid to buy her artificial arms” he says
