Governor Charity Ngilu has waded into the Female Genital Mutilation(FGM) case, setting the stage for a bruising battle to keep the menace outlawed in the country.

The Kitui Governor, who is among Kenya’s foremost defenders of women’s rights is mobilising all organizations and individuals allied to the fight against FGM to fight off a petition in a Machakos  court by a female doctor to legalize.

In a letter to the Federation of Women Lawyers Executive Director Ms Teresa Omondi, the Governor  has kindly requested that an immediate meeting of women championing against FGM be called.

“We need to reaffirm that FGM must be outlawed.” the letter read.

Dr Tatu Kamau has filed a petition in Court seeking a declaration to legalize FGM despite the rite being termed as an affront to women, backward, brutal, unhealthy and life threatening among many other negative attributes.

I wish to register my condemnation and disapproval of the position taken by the Petitioner in this case.” Ngilu begged.

The governor said it comes as a surprise that the legalization of FGM is being championed by a female medical practitioner, who must be well aware of the negative consequences associated with the practice.

I am therefore putting the Petitioner on notice that I will rally champions to oppose this cause which in my view is dead on arrival.” noted the governor.
