The former councillors who served Mwingi and Kitui District’s Municipal Councils have a reason to smile at after the leadership of Kitui County led by Governor H.E Charity Ngilu set date to pay off their financial dues.
The set date for that crucial event is 30th February, 2018.
These Councillors served different Wards of the then Kitui District which was later split to Mwingi District and Kitui District in the early 1990’s during the reign of President Daniel Moi and his K.A.N.U party.
“I will be meeting former Councillors or their successors from 9.00 am,” Governor Ngilu said.
It is expected that a total of 68 gratuity payment shall be done to the former civil leaders who served two terms in the defunct Kitui County Council which later became Kitui Municipality as well as Mwingi Municipality .
These Municipalities led by Mayors became dysfunctional in 2010 after the promulgation of the New Constitution during the reign of President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
This 2010 constitution replaced Local Governments which were led by the Mayors with County Governments are now headed by Governors.
As per the records, 8 out of 61 are deceased and therefore the payments shall be done to their succesors upon presentation of tangible evidence to prove them as their next of keen. However, the leaders are expected to bring a valid evidence to prove they served the Municipalities.
Later by 11.00 am after the event, Governor Ngilu will hold a consultative meeting with the contractors where she shall update them on plans to pay off their outstanding dues.
According to the Lands,Infrastructure and Urban Development CEC in Kitui County Hon. Jacob Kakundi ,who also chaired the Pending Bills Committee said that the verification process is over for the projects done before the August 8th,2017 General elections.
“We have the intention to pay all the contractors their pending queries as soon as next week. Those with such issues need to bring evidence supporting their claims to ease fast track,” Hon. Kakundi added.
