A section of the Mombasa Highway has been blocked following the accident that occurred at about 2 am blocking both sides of the road, causing a huge traffic jam.
In the scene a driver in one of the trucks involved in the Chyulu Hills accident on the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway has died while two others has escaped death
Police said the driver was burnt to death when the tanker transporting Liquefied Petroleum Gas from Mombasa exploded after colliding with a truck.
Traffic Commandant Samuel Kimaru is urging motorists to be cautious when approaching the scene of the accident.
In a statement by the police, motorists were warned of a gas leak and fire from the truck that was ferrying liquefied petroleum gas and urged the public to keep off the scene.
“The leaking gas is highly flammable hence all other persons, except emergency services providers, are advised to clear of the scene,” the statement by the police read in part.
Motorists from Nairobi heading to Mombasa have been advised to divert at Emali to the Loitoktok-Taveta Road then head to Voi while those traveling from Mombasa to Nairobi should divert at Voi and take Taveta-Loitoktok- Emali Road.
Fire fighters and other emergency teams are at the scene.
