Two people; a woman aged 56 years and a nursery school child 7 years died yesterday after they were drowned by Ilenye river at Ithumbi area in Mwingi central sub county, Kitui county, following heavy rains in the area.
This comes just few days after the weather man warned of heavy rains in different parts of Kenya by end of this week.
The young boy is said to have been on his way home from Ithumbi Primary school, before he was drowned by the nearby river which had flooded following heavy rains on Tuesday afternoon.
Kiluti Kyenza was on her way home from Ithumbi shopping centre at around 19:00 hours when she met her untimely death.
Confirming the incident, Mwingi police OCPD John Nyamu said that they got reports of the body of the seven year old child who had drowned in a river and that’s when he send some officers to collect the body. Few hours later, Kiluti’s body was recovered from the same river.
Following the incident, Mr Nyamu has warned residents of Mwingi against crossing flooded rivers, especially during this rainy season where heavy rains are expected.
“I want to warn residents of Mwingi against crossing rivers after a period of heavy rains, as this would be endangering their lives. Parents and teachers should not allow children to go to school or home alone, as they may not know the magnitude of water in the nearby rivers and may attempt to cross thus drown in the process,” Advised the police boss.
Bodies of the two have been taken to Mwingi Level IV hospital mortuary, pending further investigations on the actual cause of their deaths.
