Wiper party candidate Edith Nyenze has succeeded her late husband Francis Nyenze as the Kitui West Member of Parliament after thrashing her rivals in the much contested race.
Nyenze, despite the by-election registering a low voter turnout, was announced winner one the early morning g of Tuesday by the IEBC returning officer James Mbai.
In the race that saw 38 per cent of the constituency’s 52,042 registered voters participating, Nyenze thrashed her four competitors with a historic 72 percent.
The Wiper party candidate garnered 14,372 which translates to 72.67 per cent of the votes cast in the by-election followed by Independent candidate Dennis Muli who came a distant second with 2,046 votes.
Robert Mutiso and Frida Nyiva of Narc Kenya and the Kenya National Congress parties came third and fourth with 1,784 and 1,075 votes respectively. The race was finalised by less-known Chama Cha Uzalendo’s Elijah Kilonzi who hammered a mere 499 of the votes cast.
While giving a short acceptance speech at Matinyani tallying centre Mrs. Nyenze pledged to serve all the residents of Kitui West, whether they supported her or not, and further extended an olive branch to all her challengers to work together for the constituents.
“I will be an MP for all the people,“Mrs Nyenze said before calling on her opponents to a toy d table meeting.
“They had good agenda. That is why I ask them to join hands with me in serving the people“
