Bodies of four people who have been missing after drowning at Enziu River in Mwingi East sub County, Kitui County alongside the Probox they were in have been successfully retrieved from the river.
The four went missing three weeks ago when their vehicle was swept by the flooding river and officers from the National Youth Service, County government of Kitui as well as from the Kenya RedCross have been camping at the Enziu bridge for long, in a bid to help retrieve the bodies.
According to Mwingi police OCPD Paul Munene today’s happening was a great breakthrough in ascertaining the whereabouts of the four, as they were just suspected to have drowned in the river after they went missing.
“I want to say that finally we have succeeded in our operation and now the families of the four people can have some time to rest, as they continue with burial arrangements, “ said the police boss.
Mr Munene said that the bodies were recovered about 500 metres away from the bridge, and has been buried about six feet deep in the sand.
However, according to the police boss, their bodies were still intact inside the probox and have been rushed to Mwingi level IV hospital mortuary where a post Morten will be done to ascertain the cause of their death.
Muliwa Musyimi whose sister is among the four people whose bodies were recovered said that it’s a great relief since now they can go on with burial arrangements.
Ms Musyimi said that their family had endured a lot of suffering in the process of trying to recover bodies of their loved ones from the river.
Ndambuki Ndunda from Kangundo in Machakos county , whose son driving the vehicle the vehicle and also the owner of the Toyota Probox lauded the government for the efforts which ensured that at last bodies of their loved ones are recovered successfully.
>”I want to thank the government for the efforts they put in ensuring that bodies of our loved ones are recovered,” said Mr Ndunda.
Mr Ndunda said that their family have incurred a lot of expenses in the search, having to move to and from Kitui on daily basis.
