Over 500,000 School going girls in Kitui county have been issued with sanitary towels through an exercise spearheaded by Kitui women Representative Dr. Irene Kasalu.

Kitui county received Ksh.26 million from the national government for the exercise. Every girl from standard 6 upto form four is receiving 4 packets of sanitary towels every term within 1,700 schools in Kitui.

Speaking in Mwingi primary School where she launched the exercise in Mwingi central sub county, Dr. Kasalu  insisted that she wants to see girls equitably competing with boys without them skipping any classes because they lack pads during that time of the month.

“During our time, we used blankets. I want to ensure that girls are in class every day of the month and that they are comfortable.” she emphasized.

However, Dr Kasalu lamented that rape cases are spiraling each day adding that majority of the perpetrators are fathers.

The Kitui County legislator said it’s criminal to meditate over such cases adding that culpable chiefs will face the law.

Dr Kasalu decried rising cases of rape and defilement adding that some are not reported as the locals prefer Kangaroo court’s mediation.

She said that retrogressive cultural practices will not be tolerated to interfere with the livelihoods of the school going minors.

“Such victims endure despicable trauma throughout their lives since they live with their childhood perpetrators,”noted Dr Kasalu.
