The Makueni County Assembly has passed a motion to establish a public University in the region.
The Motion which was passed yesterday(Tuesday) at the County Assembly wants the Education CS Amb. Amina Mohamed and the Commission on University Education to establish the University that will be named Makueni University.
The motion which was moved by Emali MCA Nicodemus Muthoka bagged support from All MCAs who argued that students from Makueni have been disadvantaged as they have to travel outside the county to get higher education from a public University.
Makueni County is the only county in Ukambani region which has no public university. According to section 26 if the University act. The Commission on University Education should establish public universities in all the counties giving first priority to counties that have no universities.
When the University is established it will not only be of great help to students but also to the residents at large. It will create more jobs for both skilled and unskilled personnel which will be a big boost the county government in job creation.
Apart from creating jobs directly, the university will also create indirect jobs including:
Housing: More houses will be needed to accommodate students across the country who will be admitted in the university.
Boda Boda business: The boda boda business will blossom as many use it as means of transport to connect places of short distances. Students and workers at the newly established university will also need boda bodas to move around.
Food vendors: Food vendors like in any other place with a university will be at business as not many students at the school cafeteria or cook at their hostels preferring food from food vendors.
Area residents could not hide their joy upon receiving the news saying that the County Assembly is now performing their role under Hon. Douglas Mbilu’s leadership.
