Kitui county Commissioner Samuel Kimiti has warned all owners of gambling machines and bars selling illicit brews in the county, to either desist from the illegal business or face the full wrath of law.
Speaking after a day-long meeting with all assistant county commissioners, chiefs and assistant chiefs from the larger Mwingi region at Mwingi town on Thursday, Mr Kimiti said that anyone conducting gambling or betting businesses in Kitui must have a license from the Betting Control Board.
“The illegal gambling machines have increased levels of crime in the county as even school going children have been stealing money from their parents so as to engage in gambling,” Kimiti added
The position of the county commissioner is that so far not even a single owner of a betting machine in the county has acquired a valid license from the betting control board. He further said that a major crackdown will be conducted in order to clear such machines from the county by 30th of this month.
Mr Kimiti also directed all officers from the local administration especially chiefs and assistant chiefs to ensure that they do away with all illicit brews in their areas and to ensure that any bar owner who is found selling illicit drugs is brought to book.
The county commissioner who is just three months old in Kitui said that it’s the responsibility of the local administration to ensure that there is law and order in the society for a smooth running of the government and delivery of services to the citizens.
“I am ready to transform Kitui county to working jointly with all elected leaders in order to develop the county, “ Kimiti said
The County Commissioner said drug abuse and gambling has adversely affected education in the county, with only one student in the county having scored A in last year’s KCSE examinations.
