Nine people were on Wednesday morning, killed and at least 20 others seriously injured in a road accident on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway near Sultan Hamud in Makueni county.
The fatal accident involved a bus, which collided head on with a lorry, being set ablaze as a result. This is as confirmed by witnesses at the scene and the police.
Makueni County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim said the victims had been taken to Kilome Nursing Home for treatment.
“It was a fiery clash.The bus burst into flames after the collission,”said Maalim.
Other survivors stated that the two vehicles collided head on causing the fire.
The bus was headed to Mombasa when the incident happened.
Police boss from Eastern region,Moses Ombati said they had opened doors for investigations into the incident.
It is not clear which vehicle was on the wrong.There are fears that the loss might increase as those injured had serious injuries.
The deceased were taken to Makindu Hospital Mortuary.Such incidents are not rare on the highway especially near Sultan Hamud area.
Earlier last month,a school van owned by Starlight Academy collided with a trailer claiming the driver on the spot.
Six pupils were injured and rushed to Kilome Nursing Home.The school van was headed to Mombasa.
On December last year,seven people perished in Kalimbini near near Sultan Hamud after a fatal accident involved a hearse and a lorry.
