Kitui County Governor Hon. Charity Ngilu accompanied by the Chief Officer in the ministry of Water and Irrigation Mr Benjamin Kioko Kiilu visited Kyandui Poultry Farm on Tuesday October 2nd where she expressed her dedication to have every village along river banks enganged in agribusiness and those in water scarce areas get engaged in chicken rearing. The chicken of her suggestion includes broilers and layers and the indignious(kienyeji) ones which survives under the Kitui County climate.
Hon. Charity Ngilu plans to have the community trained on farming, chicken rearing and also support those in riverbanks with the required machinery to be of help in vegetable farming.Ngilu discouraged the act where a trader would import 400 crates of eggs from Kiambu County or other counties and sells them in Kitui County at much higher price when a farmer (Musangi) from the Kitui county can rear and engage in the same business lowering the prices hence making the trade more easier.
“I won’t allow this to continue because Musangi can be empowered to produce these quantities, and instead of that trader buying them from other counties, they buy from Musangi right here” Governor Ngilu said.
She said this when she visited a farmer Mr.Benjamin Nambali at his Kyandui farm. With only 1100 Chicken, he manages to supply 120 crates of eggs weekly, to a certain retailer in Kitui town. The Governor and the county government promised to give out water pumps and tractors to those near riverbanks, so that they can produce vegetables good enough to be consumed in Kitui county, so that the residents and business people can stop the importation of the same goods from other counties, so as to have money circulate within the county
