Kitui governor suspends five county officers on graft allegations

Five senior Kitui County officials have been suspended for alleged corruption and misconduct, following Governor Julius Malombe’s vow to purge his administration of any malpractice.

He said the officers been repeatedly accused, by trade, civic and youth organisations, of demanding bribes from contractors as a precondition for securing tenders and also inflating service prices.

“Some of the officers I have interdicted are allegedly said to inflate project costs for personal gain in addition to colluding with revenue payers and collectors to deny the county government income from tax collections,” said Governor Malombe.

They are Paul Kioko (County Minister for Lands Minister), Musyoka Nyamai (County Secretary), Grace Kavinya Muimi (Finance Chief Officer), Emma Kamene Kitemange (Culture, Youth, Gender and Sports Chief Officer) and Dr Evans Mumo Mwangangi (Deputy Director of Health and Sanitation).

The governor said that he has temporarily appointed Tourism minister Peter Gitonga Nkunda to oversee the Lands docket, Culture, Youth, Gender and Sports docket to Titus Kithome, Ms June Mwania (Finance) and Mr Alex Mimanzi (County Secretary).

The directive comes barely three days after the Wednesday International Anti-corruption Day fete, where he had promised reign in on corrupt officers.
