The Waita Secondary school student drowned in the dam after they were send to draw some water from a nearby stream when taps went dry in the institution, a senior teacher at the school Julius Mukui said

“However some of the students opted to fetch water from the dam, which is a kilometre away from the school. He was among the boys who decided to swim but unfortunately he drowned,” he said.

Students alerted the school authorities of the incident after their efforts to rescue their schoolmate were rendered futile. The body was retrieved later same day.

The rescue was frustrated by the lack of a professional swimmer until a renowned swimmer from the area volunteered to retrieve the boy’s body from the dam. The Star reported.
