Suspected sand barons injure five officers, burn three patrol vehicles in Makueni County.

Suspected patrol vehicles were put on fire by the sand barons.

Unfortunate incidence was reported on Friday night when Makueni Sand Authority Enforcement officers at Kima in Makueni on the evening of August 4th were allegedly ambushed by suspected sand barons who burned their three patrol vehicles and brutally beat them up and causing serious injuries to five who are now nursing injuries at the hospital.

Makueni County has been at the forefront in the fight against illegal sand harvesting and was among the first counties in lower Eastern region to ban sand harvesting business especially by foreigners. The county has been hell-bend on this position since then, a decision that could have sparked outrage among sand barons who have heavily relied on the commodity.

Since the ban was issued the sand barons have had it rough and this may have contributed to this unacceptable action of attacking the enforcement officers and burning their patrol vehicle as a revenge
