Malombe’s donation of Kshs 5.5 M to a Migwani school raises eyebrows

Kitui Governor Julius Malombe.

When the Kitui Governor Julius Malombe donated a total of Kshs. 5.5 million last weekend at Itoloni Girls Secondary School harambee many were left tongue-wagging.

Many of the critical Kitui residents have questioned the motivation behind the humongous contribution with critics speculating on whether the donation was just out of good will or meant to hoodwink the people of Mwingi West.

Reaction from the teams opposing the governor seem to have read mischief and strongly hold that the latest governor’s involvement in harambees across the county is a tool for political manipulation and backing.

Kshs 6.9 million was realized from the funds-drive where Kshs.1.4 M was received in cash while Kshs 5.5M was donated by the Kitui County Governor.

The governor said Kshs 2.5M was meant for construction of the school kitchen while Kshs. 3M would facilitate construction of a dormitory at the school.

Rivals argue that the timing of these harambees is suspicious, as it coincides with the clamor by the governor towards his re-election bid.

It however remains debatable whether governors’ engagement in harambees infringes on the law that prohibits public officials from presiding or participating in harambees.

We support the gesture but we are curious to know if the county government of Kitui is not using our resources to politically position themselves, let someone state clearly what comes from governor’s pocket and that from the county government.
