Almost every county government has flouted tendering rules and violated staffing guidelines by rewarding cronies and relatives, the anti-graft watchdog had earlier reported but the latest revelation from the Kitui county government is quite mind-boggling.
A desktop computer suspected to be containing files with contracts for all tenders awarded since 2013 was mysteriously reported missing from the office.
The lady suspected to have been involved in the loss is said to be a daughter to the County Chair of Maendeleo ya Wanawake, she works at the Governor’s office as an Assistant director. The mother is also said to be among the biggest beneficiaries of the county tenders.
Malombe has however been seen defending the lady despite a directive by the County Public Service Board ordering for her immediate suspension and commencement of investigations on the matter, but the letter was later trashed by the county secretary acting on orders from the governor.
Is Malombe shielding thieves? One may ask.
Speculations are high that the loss of the desktop was an orchestrated move to paralyses any attempts to uncover undergoing serious malpractise in procurement and to prevent some top county officials from being hauled to court in the event that enough evidence was gathered.
The truth is that relatives and governor ‘s followers have been trading at the county. Tenders and jobs go to people linked to the county boss, county executives and MCAs in exchange of gaining political force and support ahead of 2017.
