Nuu forest risks becoming a desert in the next few years going by the current rate of deforestation, the last hope of a forest cover in Kitui county is under alarming attack by charcoal barons who are cutting trees indiscriminately, one among the few forest covers remaining in the remote parts of Kitui county.

Cutting trees for firewood and charcoal is ranking top on the causes of deforestation in Kitui.

Surely, the ground is fertile for a thriving charcoal business as huge charcoal barons are bribing their way into the county even after a law was passed to ban charcoal business in the county.

After all, for many rural households, earning a living from farming and selling firewood and charcoal are essential to survival.

A lorry is spotted from Nuu carrying over 200 bags of charcoal yesterday August 20, but it seems this is just but a drop in the sea according to the residents.

“Every day, such lorries and even bigger ones than this (pictured) pass here carrying same commodity to the same place.” A disturbed resident Jeremiah Mwendwa said.

“I am appealing to people of Nuu to wake up and say no to these charcoal burners dangerously destroying our natural forest. They are not of any economical income to our region but only advancing desertification. “ He said.

“People of Nuu let us come up and say no to this dangerous activity being carried out in our region which is likely to cause diverse damages to our environment.” Jeremiah added

It is the hope of all stakeholders that the county government will adequately address the key question of protecting forests on one hand, and facilitating for a better livelihood for all. In order to kill the dreading practices ripping off our forest cover.
