Saturday is work as usual in Machakos County; Mutua’s new work policy.

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua at his office.

Governor of Machakos Alfred Mutua is a man who is never short of stunts, he is quite synonymous with pulling surprises and his latest declaration has rubbed many in the wrong way after he ordered county employees to report to work on Saturdays, six days in a week.

“This is in total contravention of the of labour laws and freedom of worship for the staff that goes to church on Saturdays.” Senator Muthama was reported disagreeing with the policy.

But Mutua has proved to be a witty guy; he must have a pool of smarter lawyers around him as he uses the law to counter another law.

According to the Employment Act, workers are entitled to 24 consecutive hours of rest per week. Employment Act has not specified any day as a weekly rest day.

The employer and the worker may agree to defer the worker’s weekly rest day. It may be rescheduled on the successive day or may be accumulated and taken at once as a fully paid leave of maximum fourteen days.

The senior county Staff is also set to sign performance contracts. Machakos county staff including the governor, county executives, chief officers, directors and head of departments reported to work Saturday following the directive. According to a report by Hivisasa.
