Machakos University College among eight to be awarded charters.

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i addresses members of the press.

After the charter award for Machakos Univeristy College was postponed during the presidential tour to Ukambani mid this year, there is a ray of hope for the institution after the Minister of Education Fred Matiang’i announced that the college will be among eight others to be chartered by the president earl next month.

President Uhuru Kenyatta will award charters to the universities at State House, Nairobi, on October 7.

The university colleges that will receive the charters are Kirinyaga, Machakos, Rongo, Co-operative, Taita Taveta, Murang’a, Embu University and Kenya Assemblies of God East Africa School of Theology (a private college) to become fully-fledged universities.

“The expansion of the universities will increase admissions as only a third of students who sit for Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination join universities due to a shortage of places.” Said Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
