Journalists in Kitui town took to the streets a peaceful demonstration over the preceding shots of intimidation by some politicians from the region.
Expressing their concerns outside the County Commissioner’s office today, the journalists restated that no level of hounding or abuse of courts by politicians will surrender their freedom.
“We want to be very clear to the society, especially to the political class that Kitui journalists will not relent in efforts to warrant a free, fair and empowered press through the guaranteed freedom enshrined in the constitution” stated the crew.
In a letter copied to the County Commissioner, the Kenya Human Rights Commission, the Law Society of Kenya and the County IEBC Coordinator, the journalists conveyed the attention a consistent pattern to intimidate Kitui based journalists by the Nairobi lawyer and Former Law Society of Kenya Chair Eric Mutua.
The journalists said that no amount of intimidation presently and in future would deter them from exercising justified and sovereign reporting of unfolding events in Kitui and Kenya at large.
The oppressed journalists last year reported a demonstration in Mwingi town that had been staged by several clients of Eric Mutua’s law firm, demanding compensation for their insurance.
Eric Mutua is a Mwingi Central Parliamentary aspirant in this year’s election who is set to dislodge the incumbent Hon. Joe Mutambu and also square out his chief opponent Dr. Mulyungi, the most popular candidate among the electorate.
