Kalonzo roasted, booed in hometurf over Wiper unpopular “choice” of Malombe

Wiper leader and NASA deputy presidential candidate Kalonzo Musyoka yesterday received a shock of his life when Kitui residents rejected his party’s gubernatorial nominee Julius Malombe in his face and shouted him down.

Angry mourners at Senator David Musila mother’s sendoff ceremony at Migwani AIC grounds in Mwingi West, booed Mr Musyoka after he stated his willingness to work with whomever Kitui people elect as their next governor may it be Musila, Charity Ngilu or incumbent Julius Malombe.
But the mere mention of Malombe drove the already hostile crowd nuts as “Hatumtaki huyo Malombe wako! Aende nyumbani!” chants rented the air drowning Kalonzo’s pleas to regain their audience.

Trouble started when Machakos Senator and Kalonzo’s boon ally Johnstone Muthama accused the former vice president of orchestrating an elaborate plot to rig Musila out of the April 24th Wiper gubernatorial primaries in favour of Malombe.

Muthama said it is no secret that the nominations were marred by massive irregularities perpetrated by the incumbent and his cronies adding that Kalonzo, fully aware of the scheme, was “compromised” so as to look the other way as poor Musila, then the party’s national chairman, got skinned alive.

The fiery and outspoken Senator, who recently broke ranks with the Wiper boss and dropped out of the Machakos senatorial race in a show of solidarity with Musila, went on to demand that Malombe should be stripped of the ticket and disqualified from the race for jeopardising the party democracy.

“I know Malombe shortchanged my brother Musila who the residents clearly want to take over the county helm. You don’t expect me to share a podium with such a fraud as we campaign for Nasa in Ukambani,” amid cheers of approval from the crowd Muthama told Kalonzo with a tone of finality.

He as well advised Kalonzo to desist from imposing his preferred candidates on the people of Kitui and the rest of Ukambani to avoid facing rebellion in his political backyard.

“Leave local politics to the electorate of Kitui and concentrate on NASA’s noble mission to depose the UhuRuto government which has mismanaged the country and left Kenyans desperate and heavily indebted,” said Muthama.

His sentiments were echoed by Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior, Kitui Woman Rep Nyiva Mwendwa and MPs Francis Nyenze (Kitui West), Bernard Kitungi (Mwingi West), Joe Mutambu (Mwingi Central) and Makali Mulu (Kitui Central) among other dignitaries who watched and listened in disbelief as Kalonzo braved the humiliation.
But Kalonzo, when he stood to speak, unsuccessfully tried to vindicate himself from the nomination mess arguing that he never had a finger in the outcome that left Musila disgruntled, prompting him to quit Wiper and relinquish his chairmanship to contest as an independent candidate.

“We founded Wiper together with my brother Musila and there is no way I could have done such injustice to him. I can tell you that, though I received his resignation letter, I will neither acknowledge nor reply to it because I want him back,” Kalonzo said but the congregants would hear none of it as they incessantly accused him of giving them a raw deal by handing Malombe the nomination certificate.
As if owning up his party mistakes, the Nasa co-principal further said the just concluded nominations across Kenya were enough proof that not only Wiper but all other parties nationwide are ill equipped to handle free, fair and credible intra-party elections.

Ford-Kenya party leader and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula, who was also present, advised Kalonzo to put his house in order and to respect the will of Ukambani residents to avoid unnecessary discontentment and voter apathy in the much anticipated August 8 General Election as the local dynamics could diminish NASA’s chances of emerging victor.
