Leaders in Mwingi, Kitui County, have raised concerns over unbridled sand harvesting which has escalated erosion along local rivers and defaced the environment.
Nguutani MCA Stephen Katana yesterday asked the government to swiftly control sand mining in order to alleviate further environmental degradation.
He said the banks of seasonal rivers like Nguutani/Kivou river have continuously collapsed as a result of constant excavation of the mineral for sale.
The Ward Rep as further urged the relevant authorities to stop further issuance of sand harvesting permits as a key step towards containing the worrying trend.
Migwani OCPD Julius Muu said the police would enforce an order by Governor Charity Ngilu banning sand harvesting in the county.
He said those found engaging in the sand business will be arrested and prosecuted.
