Kitui County kicks off massive campaigns against green gram pests


Monday, November 21, 2017: The County Government of Kitui has moved to aid Ndengu farming through distribution of pesticides in order to in order to promote higher yields and quality produce.

The campaign fronted by Governor Ngilu aims at attaining high quality green grams produce that match local and international market demands.

The campaign targets all the corners of the county to realize Ngilu’s 2nd and 4th pillars in her manifesto touching on food production and wealth creation respectively.

The County Government and Kenya Red Cross officials today visited Leah Muema’s farm in Mwiwe in Mosa, Kitui Rural Sub-county where they met hundreds of farmers and agricultural officers.

Addressing farmers the Chief of Staff Mr. Crispus Ileli said that the County Government was keen on assisting farmers throughout the Ndengu production chain and ensure that farmers’ get better yields this season.

Mr Ileli urged farmers to see advise from Agricultural Extension Officers in order to benefit fully from the plan.

Kenya Red Cross Lower Eastern Coordinator Mr. Kioko Kiilu asked farmers to to cooperate with agricultural officers to ensure proper application of pesticides.

The farmers were asked to uphold appropriate crop husbandry to avoid unnecessary use of pesticides.

The Agricultural officials said pesticides were the last alternative noting that wrong application of pesticides may have unwelcome effects on the crop.

The County Government Of Kitui has distributed 400 metric tonnes of green gram (Ndengu) seeds to over 200,000 households in the county early October as a way of subsidizing farming of the valuable crop that holds high demand in India and other Asian countries.
