The County Government of Kitui is setting up an education Empowerment Fund to ensure all children in the county access quality education, Kitui County Executive for Education, ICT and Youth Empowerment Mr David Kivoto said today.
Mr Kivoto noted that the Pro-Poor Education Support Programme started by the previous administration was inadequate dealing with a huge number of children from disadvantaged background.
The county Executive was speaking today at AIC Township during a meeting to award scholarships to 8 children who qualified to benefit from the Wings to Fly initiative sponsored by Equity Bank.
He said the county government would partner and consult with other interested organizations groups and individuals to pool more resources to assist more needy children.
He challenged the eight children among them four girls and four boys, to exploit the opportunity granted by the bank to actualize their dreams and break away from their disadvantaged past.
Noting that Kitui County lagged behind in performance of national examinations. Mr Kivoto said county government wanted to ensure county was among the first 10 best performance in national examination within the next five years.
Equity Bank Kitui Branch Manager Mr Mbindyo said since inception of the programme in 2008, 130 pupils had benefitted from education sponsorship.
He said many pupils who had undergone fees sponsorship and mentorship under the programme had excelled in education and gained prestigious job in the country.
Mr Mbindyo told the children that they had an opportunity to break from a challenged past and build a better community in the county.
