Makueni and Kitui county governments have finally arrived at a common position on conservation and utilization of natural resources terming them as trans-boundary issues that require a regional approach.
In the agreement, signed by Water, Environment and Natural Resources CECs of the two counties, the two counties agreed to create sand banks from where sand dealers will get the commodity without necessarily going to the rivers.
The MoU further noted that the two will:
- Jointly explore possibilities of value addition to sand including using it to set up industrial production of ceramics and other related products.
- Explore opportunities for investments in steel making and the attendant products so that the next industrial revolution can be driven from the South Eastern Kenya Economic Bloc (SEKEB).
They also urged their Machakos and Kajiado counterparts to join them and come up with a mutual agreement on sustainable sand harvesting, resources utilization, environment and climate change management.
