Petty offenders released from Waita GK prison


It was a memorable occasion for petty offenders at Waita GK prison after the  government released over 30  of them to serve the community.

Speaking on Tuesday at Waita G K prison Kibet Sambu, Senior Principal Magistrate Mwingi Law Courts warned those whose sentences had been commuted to maintain law and order.

Ensure that you diligently follow the community service orders as prescribed to avoid being charged for breach of the orders, ‘ Sambu cautioned those released.

He called on wananchi to give the ex-convicts ample time to adjust and be fully reintegrated with other members of the society in order to experience reduced insecurity rates.

John Koech, Officer in-charge Mwingi GK Prison urged the ex-convicts to utilize the vocational skills acquired while in custody to improve their livelihoods.

Koech said that the prison decongestion exercise will save taxpayers money used to cater for their basic needs in custody.

Patrick Kilonzi, an ex-convict, was elated for being set free to serve the community outside the prison walls.

“I was arrested and convicted of malicious damage of property. I have learnt my lesson. I am now skilled in agribusiness and I will earn money from my skills,” said Kilonzi.

John Nyamu, Mwingi Central OCPD, urged those released to maintain law and order to avoid arrest and imprisonment.
