Matilda Sakwa, Machakos county commissioner on Tuesday 15 addressed prisoners at Machakos GK Prisons.
Following the current national program to reduce congestion in prisons,146 prisoners were released from various prisons in Machakos County.
63 of them were released from Machakos GK Prison on, 55 men and 8 women. Other inmates were released from Athi – River GK and Yatta Prisons.
This exercise was witnessed by the Machakos County Commissioner Matilda Sakwa, Regional Probation officer Ann Kimathi and Machakos Prison’s Boss Yusuf Kaitopok in the High Court Review move to release prisoners having less than three years sentence term through Probation and Aftercare Department to do community service outside the prisons.
“The Probation Department has processed 205 files of inmates from Machakos County and given various recommendations,” said Mr Kimathi.
Before their release, the prisoners
planted 1050 trees. Matilda Sakwa advised the released inmates to remain peaceful and avoid criminal activities mentioning that the government will check out on their behavior outside prison.
“Whenever we release prisoners, there is usually an upsurge of crime. You will be the first suspect if there is crime in your area,” Sakwa said.
The county commissioner urged the public to accept the released prisoners and relate well with them in the society.
Kaitopok,the Machacos prison boss said the prison has a capacity of holding 900 prisoners.He stated that the initiative will create space in the prison and make the prison officers’ work easier.
A 66-year-old woman,Mary Mutinda from Kangundo Sub County who had been arrested in relation to the selling bhang could not hide her joy to be free.
She advised Machakos County residents to stop crime.
Also in Kitui County, 30 prisoners were released.
They will be under probation officers while undergoing community work.
