WRA warns of Deadly Floods to come

With the floods menace tormenting the country and in compliance with the regulations on water infrastructural works and floods mitigation, Water Resources Authority visited Masinga and Kiambere dams to assess the impact of the spillage on communities living around the dams.

The CEO, Mr Mohamed Shurie issued a Flood alert to the residents of Garissa and Tana River Counties who are located on the downstream of the Tana River, urging them to move to higher grounds to prevent loss of lives, livelihoods and properties.
The Authority empowers communities through Water Resources Users Associations (WRUAs) to build coping mechanisms for dealing with extreme weather events.
Mr Shurie also said that WRA has initiated an assessment of all dams to ascertain their legal status, stability and safety.
In this regard, WRA has notified all dam owners that they must have permits failure to which will lead to them being decommissioning.
The CEO further urged for compliance with Water Resources Management Rules and echoed the need for respecting water courses by vacating the riparian areas and pleaded with people living near the river banks to avoid any use whether informal settlement, development or farming citing its prohibited.
