Kitui CID detectives and senior county government officers Tuesday night recovered assorted hospital equipment worth millions of shillings believed to have been stolen from Kitui County Referral Hospital.
Acting on a tip-off on the suspected syndicate, the sleuths and county officials, including the Chief of Staff Crispus Ileli, raided a private residence at Muumoni centre in the outskirts of Kitui Town where the loot was stashed.
Among the items recovered were brand new desktop computers, laptops, suction machines, microscopes, TV screens, UPSs, surgical gloves, among others.
County officers attached to the major medical facility are believed to be behind the theft and reportedly fled town to avoid arrest.
The equipment was designated for Ikutha, Mutomo and Mutitu health centers.
The loot was carted to Kitui Police Station as the detectives launched investigations into the foiled heist.
No arrests have been made yet.
