Several arrests made concerning contraband sugar in Matuu

Police at Matuu in Machakos county have nabbed more than 100 tons of contraband sugar after they intercepted two trailers while they were offloading the commodity which is said to contain harmful substances.

The 2029 bags of sugar are said to have been illegally sneaked into the country from Mauritius and Egypt and it is thought to be the contraband sugar believed to contain harmful substances such as mercury and copper.

Speaking at Matuu town within Machakos, County commissioner Matilda Sakwa said that the arrest was part of the ongoing multi agency crackdown on illicit goods, adding that the arrested goods will be taken to Machakos CID Headquarters pending further investigations and examination of the goods.

Madam Sakwa has also said that the owner of Mount Kenya Wholesalers at Matuu where the goods were being offloaded, Simon Mwangi has also been arrested in connection to the illicit goods and all their outlets at Kitui and Mwingi also shut down pending further investigations.
