Mwingi: Deadly accident late Saturday night

Eight pupils from St. Gabriel primary school Mwingi died on the spot as six others are in critical condition following a grisly road accident on Saturday 4th August at around 10.00 pm along Garissa-Mwingi Highway approximately five kilometres from Mwingi town. One more pupil died at Kithimani as they were being referred to Nairobi for further treatment.

The five have been referred from Mwingi Hospital to Nairobi after their school bus collided with a lorry  at Kanginga area five kilometers from Mwingi town. The bus involved in the accident had 50 pupils on board and one driver. Two teachers are being treated for minor injuries, driver and one matron admitted too.

Mwingi Medical Superintendent Evans Mumo said five have been referred to Nairobi and are in critical condition. They received eight bodies at the hospital morgue and other injured pupils are being treated.

“It’s sad that one has died on their way to Nairobi as they were being referred. The number of the dead is now nine,” added Mumo.

Christopher Nzili, who is one of the board members said they had travelled to Mombasa on August 1st and were on their way back to Mwingi when they met the fatal accident.He said they had 92 pupils on board with two different school buses.

“We had the St. Gabriel school bus and Nguutani secondary school which we had hired. At around 10.00 pm, Nguutani school bus was  hit by the lorry ferrying gravel five kilometers from Mwingi town. It’s such a shock to have travelled all the way from Mombasa only for our children to come and perish in their home area. Let’s continue praying for the affected,”added Nzili.

Mwingi Central Deputy County DCC, Omar Ntima consoled with the relatives terming the tragedy a big loss to the community and confirmed they are investigating on the cause of the accident.

“The bus was coming from a trip in Mombasa heading back to Mwingi. It collided head to head with a lorry and the driver lost control where the bus landed in a nearby stream killing eight on the spot. The others are in critical condition but we wish them quick recovery,” added Ntima.

Mwingi central MP Gideon Mulyungi consoled the affected saying its such a big loss to the young ones. He said 26 of those involved in the accident are being treated in Mwingi level IV hospital. He called upon the drivers to be more cautious and observe traffic rules to the latter to occurrence of such deadly accidents.

Mwingi-Garissa Highway accident at Kanginga

Mwingi Central MCA Mary Kanini called for quick completion of the Thika-Garissa Highway expansion since there are many heels of soil piled on the roadside some of which are confusing the drivers.
