Unity for region’s development, Ukambani Governors decide


Barely a week after Ukambani Governors convened at Machakos town to fortify the region’s economic manpower , Machakos and Makueni County Chiefs have publicly shown the fruits of the convention by paying a courtesy call to Kitui Governor Charity Kaluki Ngilu at the county headquarters to dialogue on the region’s future socially, economically and politically.

Issues tied to the three counties’ economic development through the region’s economic bloc South Eastern Economic Bloc (SEKEB) dominated the dialogue. Other development concerns including the region’s integration, alleviation of the locals from chronic poverty and hunger were also featured in the meeting.

In a joint address outside the Kitui Governor’s office on Tuesday, November 20th the trio vowed to put aside their divergent political aspirations and work in unison to better Ukambani region.

Governor Charity Ngilu clarified that the long lasting solutions to the prolonged sufferings felt by the residents in Makueni, Machakos and Kitui counties shall only be sought through the region’s economic block. She further challenged the elected leaders to formulate the policies that would see the region’s endowed vast wealth fully harnessed.

“We will form a financial institution because we’ve the resources but have continued to use institutions that do not appreciate the unique challenges of our people” she said.

On his part, Governor Mutua termed the step as the wise leaders’ meeting aimed at deliberating their electorates from the poverty yoke and give them room for self individual development.Mutua added that there is an urgent need for immediacy in tackling water shortage across Ukambani region to enable the locals practice reliable farming through irrigation.

“We have taken the bold step today. As leaders, we must be concerned by our area’ growth position and act aptly…In Kenya, since independence, development is negotiated. Ukambani must too negotiate – but through the right people,” He said.

In his address, Prof. Kibwana stressed the need for Akamba community elected leaders to speak in one voice and shape the community’s political future.Kibwana termed this as the only way the vote rich Ukambani region will have say in the national negotiation table.The governor further expressed their readiness ready to work with the President to attain the fruits of devolution in their respective counties.

The three toured the County Textile Centre, KICOTEC and Kitui General Hospital.

Concerning the universal primary healthcare, the three county heads revealed their plan that upon implementation would see Ukambani residents enjoy joint healthcare services from any health facility from either county.
