More Pain For County Staff As Ngilu Govt Gobbles Up NHIF Deductions

Predicaments are far from over for broke and demoralized County government employees after it emerged that Governor Charity Ngilu’s administration has for months failed to submit statutory NHIF deductions to the health insurer.

The unfortunate reality manifested itself last Thursday after one of the employees was denied medical attention at one of the private hospitals in Kitui Town due accrued NHIF cover arrears.

The staff (name withheld) got a shocker of his life after visiting Nehema Hospital for medical check-up only to be dismissed after insisting on using his NHIF card to offset the bill as he’d done previously.

It was after five minutes of waiting when he was told it was impossible for him to see the doctor since his NHIF contributions had not been done for months!

“You cover is temporarily suspended due to unpaid monthly contributions. You’ll have to pay cash for consultation as well as medication,” the hospital attendant told him.

Dejected, the employee who was broke as the county government was yet to pay their July salaries, silently picked his card and walked away.

But upon making inquiries into the status of his health insurance cover, he was shocked to realize that the last contribution was made in the month of May despite subsequent deductions from his salary.

Independent investigations by KituiOnline further confirmed that the County Government of Kitui lastly submitted NHIF deductibles for its employees in May 2019.

Whatever the administration has been doing to the NHIF deductions after expending them from workers’ pay remains a mystery.

Efforts to get clarification from County HR and Finance officers bore no fruits as calls and text messages went unanswered.
