Kitui: Sports enthusiasts were treated to an exceptional performance in athletics during the premier annual Kitui half marathon championship held in Kitui South today.
The championships which brought together an estimated 300 participants from both local and national stages lit Kitui South in a day long competitions with races in different categories.
Local residents turned up in droves for the first event of its kind in Kitui South while leaders among them Kitui County Assembly representatives joined senator Enoch Kiio and Athletics Kenya officials in cheering and later awarding of prizes to victorious runners.
Sinohydro Corporation, Kiio Wambua Foundation and Golden Africa Ltd the manufacturers of the popular Avena cooking oil were the event’s main sponsors.
Others include Athletics Kenya, Sports Kenya, The Communication Authority of Kenya, Mutomo Mission Hospital and the South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU).
Steven Mwendwa and Nancy Jelagat won the 21 KM senior men and women race respectively to take home Ksh 100,000 prize money each.
Ndunda Kithikii and Jedidah Kambua won the 6KM junior men and women race for primary school pupils. They took home shopping vouchers worth Ksh 5000 each.
Other races include the 8KM senior men and women category where winners took home Ksh10,000 prize money and the 2KM fun race whose winners received shopping vouchers from the sponsors.
