Kitui County Senator, Hon Enoch Kiio Wambua has initiated the Mung Beans Bill in an attempt to elevate green grams (ndengu) farming to cash crop status.
The Bill also speaks to the question of our national food security and nutrition. The idea is to ensure structured support to our farmers by both national government (policy, regulation, standards and international markets) and county governments (extension services, drying, collection centres and local markets).
The legume does very well in at least seven counties of Taita Taveta, Makueni, Machakos, Kitui, Embu, Meru and Tharaka Nithi among other regions.
More research on the bean could result into faster maturing, high yielding and more disease resistant varieties for different regions in our country.
You are all invited to read the Bill and have a robust engagement to make it a strong legislation to serve our ndengu farmers, traders, consumers and national economy now and for posterity.
