Residents of Kivou ward in Mwingi, have protested ‘dangerous’ sand harvesting from Kivou river.
According to area residents the sand business is causing more environmental harm than the benefits. School drop out rate has also increased as the business seems to be encouraging young boys and girls engage in the business
“Our kids have dropped out of school and are engaging in sale of sand” Kitheka mwendwa, an area resident who’s unhappy about what’s happening was quoted.
Kitheka added that there’s a possibility that area MCA, Hon Muthui Maema could be involved in the business as he has been silent on the said matter in the claim that he’s well aware.
Julius Mutemi, area resident narrated that over 80 lorries ferry sand from the river on a daily basis.”If this isn’t addressed we will have no water source” says Julius. He added that if authority didn’t get involved in the matter they would take the law into their hands.
Upon reaching the area MCA for comments on the story, he stated that his efforts to reach the county leadership for help on the matter bore no fruit, since he on his part as a legislator had supported the motion which stopped the harvesting of sand and charcoal burning in Kitui county. A move that had been aimed at curbing the desert climate that kitui county was threatened to experience in the near future.
