Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has today launched Kavingo Earth Dam in Utooni/ Mbusyani Village Kyangwithya west ward, Kitui Central ,in efforts to reduce the distance travelled by our people in search of water.
The newly commissioned water project will provide 40 Million Litres with more than 3,512 beneficiaries.
Apart from the household use, the water will also be used for irrigation by the locals planting tomatoes, onions, cabbages, water melons , different fruits along side other vegetables, targeting 92 smallholder farmers at Kavingo through sustainable land management practices that will improve livelihoods of local youths.
Speaking at the launch, Governor Ngilu said that the project will be a big boost to the fruit processing plant at Kitui Agricultural Training Centre and increase mango productivity from 300 trees per year to more than 5000 trees.
A silt trap,stone pitching of the spillway and setting up of a pumping system will be submerged as well as pump control house.
Other constructions includes water point for livestock, fencing of the dam, installation of 2 water tanks @10 000 liters and construction of a pit latrine and a bathroom.
The Governor was accompanied by Deputy Governor Dr Wathe Nzau, CECs Emmanuel Kisangau, Esther Kilonzi, CO Water Kioko Kiilu, The area MCA Boniface Katumo among other technical water officers.
