Four Dead, Scores Injured in Athi River’s Matatu Accident

A fatal accident involving a 14-seater matatu and a stalled truck claimed the lives of four passengers on the morning of Wednesday, July 21, at Athi River in Machakos county.

According to the police, the matatu belonging to the Maptra Sacco rammed into the truck that had stalled on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway. The police also faulted the truck driver for failing to place warning sins on the road, thus misleading other motorists.

The accident that occurred right opposite the Total Petrol Station in Athi River left scores injured even though the police’s total number of casualties was not confirmed.

The Athi River police boss, Anderson Njagi, disclosed the matatu’s registration number as LCN 289P, which was ferrying passengers from Machakos to Nairobi. While confirming the incident, Njagi noted that the casualties were rushed to the nearing thi River Shalom Community Hospital for medical attention.

Preliminary investigations indicate the matatu driver, who was among the injured, realized that the truck was stationary when it was too late to react appropriately.
